MY PROJECT
With more than 500 million people affected worldwide, obesity has become one of the biggest public health issues in the industrialized world. Central obesity causally correlates with impaired insulin sensitivity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and increased cancer risk.
Recent studies demonstrated that adipose tissue is not only a mere lipid storage site, but directly influences whole-body energy homeostasis. Dissecting the molecular mechanisms regulating adipocyte function will therefore aid our understanding of the onset and progression of metabolic diseases. I am particularly interested in how G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) influence the development of insulin resistance and obesity. My work focuses on the role of GPCRs in adipogenesis and mature adipocyte function.
I am a member of the Erick Carreira group.
