Ph.D. Program renamed «Molecular and Translational Biomedicine» (MTB): Our Ph.D. program «Systems Biology of Complex Diseases» has been renamed «Molecular and Translational Biomedicine» (MTB). This was decided by the CC-SPMD Executive Committee and approved by the Directors’ Conference of the Life Science Zurich Graduate School. The change of name became absolutely essential, because the research focus of the Competence Center CC-SPMD evolved more and more into molecular and translational biomedicine with projects ranging from basic molecular physiology and pathophysiology to translational sciences. New group leaders who work in this field already joined the CC-SPMD or will join in the near future. Furthermore, the new title ideally reflects the spirit of the education modules of the focus program «The Metabolic Basis of Disease» which is financed via the SNF/CRUS ProDoc Program since 2012.

The Competence Center for Systems Physiology and Metabolic Diseases of the University of Zurich and the ETH Zurich organized an international symposium on 'The reciprocal interactions of signaling pathways and non-coding RNA' in autumn 2012. We brought together international renowned experts in the field to discuss the interaction of non-coding RNAs and cellular signaling pathways relevant in cancer, stress, metabolism and development. Sessions on therapeutic approaches and newest technologies were also included. By providing a platform that is not restricted to a certain area of biology, but rather focused on the function of non-coding RNAs in signaling pathways, we aimed to initiate scientific exchange between researchers from different areas, provide new insights into RNA biology and connect leading and young researchers in the field.
The symposium started on Sunday, 16 September 2012, in the late afternoon, and ended on Wednesday, 19 September 2012, at midday. It took place in the Centro Stefano Franscini, on Monte Verità near Locarno, Switzerland.

The
Competence Center for Systems Physiology and Metabolic Diseases of the
University
of Zurich and the ETH Zurich, together with the Think Tank Thurgau, the
Jakob-
and Emma-Windler-Foundation and the City of Stein am Rhein, organized an
international symposium on 'Aging and Metabolism' in spring 2011. The
meeting focused on the molecular, cellular and physiologic mechanisms by
which
tissue and organ function decline and normal homeostasis fails. We brought together leading experts from basic science, medicine and the
health care sector.
The symposium took
place in Stein am Rhein on 31 March - 2 April 2011 and also included
lectures and a round table with policy makers and scientists for the
public.

Together with the Think Tank Thurgau, the Jakob- and Emma-Windler-Foundation and the City of Stein am Rhein, CC-SPMD organized a international two-day symposium on ‘Energy homeostasis - new insights and concepts and their impact on human health’. The Symposium with around 100 attendees and international speakers took place in Stein am Rhein on 26-28 March 2009.
The scientific program comprised presentations of renowned international experts such as Johan Auwerx, Laboratory of Integrative and Systems Physiology, EPFL, Lausanne; Karin Dahlman-Wright, Department of Biosciences and Nutrition, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm; Andrew Hattersley, Diabetes Research, Peninsula Medical School, Exeter; Marc R. Montminy, Clayton Foundation Laboratories, The Salk Institute, San Diego and Juleen Zierath, Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm.
The symposium also included lectures and a round table for the public.

This symposium was organized by CC-SPMD Ph.D. Students. It took place in March 2005 on the ETH campus Hönggerberg. Four experts from very different fields gave their own perspective of energy homeostasis: David Carling (Imperial College, London), Jeroen Jeneson (Eindhoven), Jim Kaput (UC Davis) and Steve Oliver (Univ. Manchester). The topics ranged from mouse cell biology and nutrigenomics to yeast functional genomics and included also a poster session in which CC-SPMD students had the opportunity to present their work to the experts and the attending scientists.
