Ph.D. Program renamed «Molecular and Translational Biomedicine» (MTB): Our Ph.D. program «Systems Biology of Complex Diseases» has been renamed «Molecular and Translational Biomedicine» (MTB). This was decided by the CC-SPMD Executive Committee and approved by the Directors’ Conference of the Life Science Zurich Graduate School. The change of name became absolutely essential, because the research focus of the Competence Center CC-SPMD evolved more and more into molecular and translational biomedicine with projects ranging from basic molecular physiology and pathophysiology to translational sciences. New group leaders who work in this field already joined the CC-SPMD or will join in the near future. Furthermore, the new title ideally reflects the spirit of the education modules of the focus program «The Metabolic Basis of Disease» which is financed via the SNF/CRUS ProDoc Program since 2012.

The focus of the center is to investigate molecular mechanisms of metabolic disorders in man. Scientists from biology,
medicine, computer sciences, mathematics, engineering etc. who do systems biology-oriented research in the above-mentioned field of metabolic disorders are
welcome to apply as members of our center. Applicants should hold a
Ph.D. degree from an university and should be in an independent group
leader position
at either ETH Zurich or the University of Zurich. Scientists from other institutions can become associated members of the CC-SPMD.
The scientists in our center can profit from a highly interactive network that comprises expertise from the ETH departments of biology, chemistry and applied biosciences, mathematics, computer sciences and the medical faculty of the University Zurich.
Through interdisciplinary projects, via dual mentorship PhD projects, joint technology platforms, large industry collaborations and - last but not least - on common events like retreats, seminars or jointly organized PhD courses we were able to generate a spirited cross-disciplinary community that brings the power of systems biology to physiology and medicine.

Applications will be reviewed by the members of the CC-SPMD. The applicant will give a short speech during the CC-SPMD plenary meeting (which takes place at least once a year). The members of the CC-SPMD will hold a vote on an application according to the CC-SPMD bylaws. Applicants will be assessed based on their academic record, their research interests and their financial independence. The Coordinating
Office will inform the applicants about the decision in due course.
